Program

The undergraduate program in Geology offered by the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) has as its main objective the study of the ‘Origin and Evolution of our Planet Earth’.
This program forms geologists, who are professionals with the ability to ‘read the rocks’ and extract from them the information related to their formation and evolution; they are ‘interpreters’ of the language that hides the mountains and valleys; they are experts who translate to society the information contained in that extensive record of the rocks that constitute the Earth’s lithosphere and our planet in general. All this geological knowledge generated by the geologist is in turn the basis for planning and projecting the future development of any society.

Profile

The applicant to the Geology program must be willing to work in a group and interdisciplinary manner, both in the field and in the laboratory. The applicant must have good capacity for observation and analysis, to identify and reveal the origin, evolution and cause-and-effect relationships of geological processes both active and fossil. Applicants must be curious and motivated to explore the unknown, and uncover the ignomial, interested in the use of both new technologies and analytical tools used in the study of solid materials (minerals, rocks), liquids and gaseous. Applicants must have a sense of direction and the ability to understand and relate the natural processes that develop on different space-time scales.

Profile

.

The graduated geologist from the Universidad Industrial de Santander are able to perform tasks such as:

  • Exploration and exploitation of energy resources (oil, gas, coal, uranium, others), using geophysical, stratigraphic, structural and geochemical techniques.
  • Elaboration of geological maps at different study scales, using remote sensors and geographic information systems.
  • Exploration and exploitation of metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits; water, including surface and groundwater.
  • Studies and profit processes of gold, silver, copper, iron, nickel, among other materials of economic interest.
  • Research in different areas of geology, such as igneous and metamorphic petrology, organic and inorganic geochemistry, water geochemistry, stratigraphy, structural geology, sedimentology, paleontology, environmental geology, geophysics, geomorphology, among others.
  • Interdisciplinary studies with engineers and professionals from other sciences (both basic and applied), aimed at generating and adapting pure and applied knowledge in problem-solving.
  • Perform other tasks of the geologist, as stated in Law 9 of September 30, 1974, which regulates the exercise of geology in Colombia.

The Geology program has implemented a process of continuous improvement that will allow future professionals to have a solid educational foundation with the capacity to manage innovative processes, emerging technologies, and anticipate the welfare and safety needs of the community. With this, students, employers, and society in general will be confident that the program meets quality standards and prepares graduates to enter a global workforce.

Program Educational Objectives

Geology graduates will be able to:

  1. Work in the private industry, governmental institutions, as consultants or independent professionals.
  2. Apply fundamental knowledge in the different disciplines of the Geology to solve problems framed in the Sustainable Development Goals.
  3. Recognize the need to use promote a sustainable use of our Earth resources, and the importance of including a socio-economic and environmental perspective into the geological activities
